Whilst staying in a beautiful resort in Kommeno Bay, on the eastern coast of Corfu, we decided to take a trip to The Old Town.
This area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was a fantastic place to start using my second-hand camera and begin the walking section of my blog.
We spent a morning wandering around The New Fortress and the narrow streets crowded with shops and cafes.
The New Fortress cost 5 euros each to get in and enabled me to take some brilliant shots of the town and the port.
Click on the the 'find out more' button below for further information about the area.
Once we had explored the New Fortress, we headed back into the town’s narrow streets, passing houses with washing strung above our heads, scooters weaving between people and an orthodox priest strolling along chanting. The church that you can make out in a couple of the photos (with the red bell tower) is Saint Spyridon Church, the entrance to which is part of a beautiful white square in the centre of the narrow maze of cobbled streets.
There are many shops and cafes packed into the town and all of the usual tourist merchandise as well as the Body Shop and Marks and Spencer! The buildings are beautiful examples of largely venetian style architecture and the overall look is not at all spoilt by the shops and cafes that fill the lower floors.
1. Apparently, the majority of shops and cafes prefer you to pay in cash.
2. Get there early (although I do this wherever I go as nowadays I worry about parking and like to get to places before they are even open).
3. Talk a walk around the New Fortress, if only to take photos of the town and port.
4. DON’T hire a car and drive into town – use the free shuttle bus provided by your resort. Unless you have psychopathic tendencies.
5. If you love a bargain, visit at the end of October as there are sales on because people are shutting up shop for the winter months.
Disclaimer: I have only been to Corfu once (but would definitely go again) so please don’t think there is any expertise behind this advice.
